Can I connect an AI agent or automation to Google Sheets?

Yes. Google Sheets has an API, so an AI agent or automation can read a spreadsheet to answer customers and write new rows, such as leads, orders or form replies. The API allows 300 reads and 300 writes per minute per project, and a spreadsheet holds up to 20 million cells. To start automating, a spreadsheet is usually enough.

What are the numbers, with sources?

  • The Google Sheets API allows 300 read and 300 write requests per minute per project, and 60 per minute per user per project. (Source: Google Sheets API limits)
  • A spreadsheet created in or converted to Google Sheets holds up to 20 million cells or 100 MB. (Source: Google Drive file limits)
  • The batchUpdate method groups several changes into a single call; if one of them fails, none of the others is written. (Source: Google Sheets batchUpdate)

What does an AI agent do with a spreadsheet?

The most common uses:

  • Check the price, stock or delivery sheet to answer customers with today’s data.
  • Write every lead that arrives through WhatsApp or the website to a new row.
  • Update an order’s status when the customer confirms.
  • Collect form replies and send the team a summary.

Do the Google Sheets API limits get in the way?

Not day to day. They do when an automation writes one row per call in a loop with thousands of items; the fix is to group changes in a batchUpdate.

When does a spreadsheet stop being enough?

When several people edit at once and move columns around, when you need to control who sees what, or when the pipeline needs history. At that point the sheet usually becomes a base like Airtable or a CRM. For Solojet Aviação, Notkode used Google Sheets together with RD Station and n8n.

Common mistakes

  • Writing one row per call in a large loop and exceeding the 300 writes per minute limit.
  • Letting the team rename or move columns the automation relies on, which breaks the flow without warning.
  • Connecting the automation with someone’s personal account, which loses access when they leave.
  • Using the spreadsheet as the database of a product that has outgrown it.

How does Notkode connect agents and automations to Google Sheets?

Notkode integrates agents and automations with CRMs (HubSpot, Pipedrive, RD Station), Google Sheets and Excel, ERP and finance systems, Notion and Airtable, Google Calendar and custom systems. In 2024, for Loss Prevention, it connected the website form to Airtable with n8n, so leads land in the CRM without anyone copying them. A project is ready in 2 to 3 weeks on a normal timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with Excel too?

Yes. Excel on Microsoft 365 has an API as well, and Notkode integrates agents and automations with both Google Sheets and Excel.

Do I need a paid Google Workspace account?

Not to use the API. A paid account helps keep the spreadsheet under a company account rather than a person’s.

Can the agent answer from a price spreadsheet?

Yes. It reads the right row during the conversation, so its answers follow the sheet whenever the team updates a price.

How long does the integration take to go live?

At Notkode, 2 to 3 weeks on a normal timeline, 1 to 2 weeks on a fast one and within 1 week when urgent.
